Spring! This season brings all kinds of new possibilities as days get
longer and there is a progression of good feelings. This Sunday is St.
Patrick’s Day, followed by the official start of spring two days later and
Easter comes at the end of the month. In the sporting world, the NCAA men’s
basketball tournament is set to get started – one of the most anticipated
events of the year.
March is a great time to do something new in marketing. Change is in the
air (quite literally as the trees and flowers begin to bloom and send pollen
into the wind) and there is a good vibe about being alive and active after a
cold winter. When people are in a good mood, they are more likely to buy
something new. Getting out in front of this wave of good feelings is important
for your marketing.
What should you be marketing in the spring? For one, something new. Now
is a good time to promote a new line, a new brand, a new initiative, etc. If
you are selling the same products and services as before, it may be in your
best interests to give them a fresh look and a different marketing campaign.
While the marketing mood is on the positive upswing, why not provide an
incentive for trying your products or services for the first time? Consumers
are more open-minded to buy an item for the first time when they are in a good
mood. Marketing a sale or a discount is very effective when the mood of the
market is positive. Give them a reason to try your brand.
Another marketing tactic to implement right now is anything that will
cause someone to leave their office and meet you face-to-face. This is a good
season for the sponsorship of events that happen outdoors. Golf outings,
concerts, sporting events, etc. are beginning soon. Outdoor activities may be a
bit risky during the springtime weather (depending upon where you live), but
doing something that causes people to leave the same four walls they’ve been
staring at all winter will do wonders for your sales. The tradeshow season
kicks off in the spring for this reason. However, even if you sponsor a lunch
and learn or some other in-person meeting where there is some sort of energy to
the time you spend, now is the time to do so. People feel energized by their changing
environment. Take advantage of it because a good part of marketing is making
people feel good about your brand. Associating your brand with the seasonal
change makes all kinds of sense.
Spring is here! Hitch your marketing to the good emotions that come
along with this season and ride that fresh feeling forward. Happy people are
ready to spend money.
