Social Responsibility:
The capacity to show that you are a contributing member of your society. This element of
emotional intelligence includes acting responsibly, even if you will not personally benefit from it. It also
includes accepting others, doing unto others as you would like done to you, and keeping in
accord with social rules. Being socially responsible means having a sensitivity for the concern of others and
using their skills for the communal good. Those who are lacking this capacity may take advantage of others and/or
be offensive and rude.

Regional sales are down and Joy has been working 75 hours a week to change that trend upward.
The only upward trend was all the miles she was putting on her car to travel to each store in
her region. When she sat down with the vice president of sales, he made an overtly odd request
of Joy: cut her hours in half and give back to the community! See what happens in this reversal
of corporate logic.
